I have loved trains and life around train stations for a very long time. Going Home is the fruit of this love affair; and I would be really pleased if you were to be part of it. The project has three distinct sides to it – first, there is a short film called Going Home; secondly, there is an e-book accompanying the film, which I hope to write even as we make the film.
We are hoping to shoot Going Home in February 2017. When we were children, my parents lived in Bokaro Steel City, a small town north-west of Kolkata (or Calcutta as we used to call it). My father was an engineer who worked for the Steel Plant; but we were people who came from the deep south – from Bangalore, in fact. So every year, almost three times a year, we would pack our bags and embark on a three-day journey to my mother’s ‘native place’ – we would be ‘going home’. Each journey was an expedition, no matter how often we took it. There was a great sense of excitement and adventure and now, forty years on, the same trains still run at the same time. I will be taking the train to re-live those moments, while also reflecting on how India has moved on in forty years. Do join me on this voyage or yatra as we in India call it!
